Unsafe India!

In a recent Thomson Reuters Foundation survey, India has been named the most dangerous country for women. This is surprising as India is the world’s largest functioning democracy.
In the survey women from Delhi were questioned about safety, majority of them said no. The women that said they felt safe had learned to modify their behaviour. For example they do not go out alone unnecessarily, come home early, are careful, and alert.
All of these alarming facts compelled me to think one question, why are women feeling oppressed in democratic country.
On July 4, 2018 a girl living in Gurugram, India committed suicide. She was threatened by two boys with ‘sexual assault’ after her scooter had collided into their bike and they had a verbal argument. The 22 year old girl was petrified; hence, on returning home she committed suicide. Her family fearing of the safety of her sisters said they did not want to press the matter.
This incident has left me heartbroken. I keep questioning why are we so oppressed, can’t we just be fearless. The world needs to be more sensitive towards the issues of women and minorities. Nevertheless the oppressed people must have the courage and capability to resist and push back. Let’s be resilient and in the words on Sheryl Sandburg let’s ‘Lean In’.
